![]() It wasn’t trying to be any more complex than that and it could get away with it considering how dark and stylish it was. It was a hardboiled cop, framed for a crime he didn’t commit going on a rampage through the criminal underworld to bring down those responsible for the death of his family. Part of why the plot worked so well in the first game was due to the fact it was so simple. Being assigned to the case, Max begins to unravel a major conspiracy while also battling his own personal demons. ![]() Things get even more complicated when Mona Sax appears at the scene too. While investigating a shootout at local warehouse, Max discovers that a group of assassins disguised as crime scene cleaners are targeting the operations of a local crime boss. He’d quite the DEA and would return to his old job as a detective in the NYPD. However, his colleges in the DEA attempted to frame Max’s actions as a heroic which did not sit right with him, especially considering how disturbed he is by his own actions. Max Payne 2 takes place 2 years after the first game and we find that Max was acquitted of all his “Crimes” and was allowed to walk free following his rampage. So I did an overly negative review of it and after playing Max Payne again and actually enjoying it, I was curious as to whether or not Max Payne 2 was better than I remember….and it is….kind of. This was also before I realized it was a bad idea to play sequels back to back. Outside of the fact that I didn’t really like the first game, I only chose to play it because I bought alongside its predecessor. I remember playing Max Payne 2 around 2011 and I gotta be honest, I didn’t think too highly of it. It’s just one of those bizarre mysteries of the gaming industry. I mean, it was a follow up to a game that people really liked and they had the combined marketing weight of Take-Two and Rockstar behind it. From what I can find, no one knows exactly why this happened. Though the game was another critical success, for whatever reason, Max Payne 2 was a bomb at retail. However, Max Payne 2 ended up falling flat on its face. These ports proved be successful as well, prompting Rockstar to buy up the rights to the franchise and hire Remedy to produce a followup. So much so that Rockstar would approach Remedy about porting the game to consoles. Yet, despite all this, the game would be a critical and commercial success. It was the first time Remedy Software had developed a triple A game and it was a dark, violent, film noir inspired game in a time period where people were still clinging to this idea that video games were toys for kids. Why not just call it Max Payne 2 or The Fall of Max Payne? Anyway, Max Payne was sort of a surprise hit when it released in 2001. ……Nearly 10 years of doing this blog and that is still the most redundant video game title I have ever come across.
